Is anyone thinking of going? My brother and I are planning that weekend out now. It takes place June 25-28th. Turns out it is only a 3hr drive or so from home(PA), we both thought it was farther north in NY. We want to rent one of the new big Dodge Ram vans from Enterprise and camp out of it while we are there. The plan is to bring cheap blow up furniture, a tent and or folding pavilion cover, a good radio, copious beer cases, etc and have our selves an awesome time watching the racing that weekend.

I wish I could go but I live in CA. One day I hope to make it to this beautiful track.

That all sounds great/ a perfect weekend there. As someone who’s interned/ 4th year SCCA volunteer at the Glen I see no gaps in your plan and wish you an awesome weekend.
I mmmight be there depends on whether I’m in Colorado by then. Its a 35 minute drive for me it’d be stupid to not try and be up there as much as possible. It really is a beautiful, magical chunk of land once you get to know it.
I’ve been to the six hours 3 times? It was the first racing event I went to where I was really like WHOA. LOUD. FAST (way back on ‘06) and all internet arguments of Daytona Prototypes seemed really, really stupid and completely unfounded afterward.
A few things you must do:
...not
must
, but for your sanity and completeness of your journey I seriously recommend skimming the bottom tip of Ithaca first to take the NY “scenic” route 327 past Treeman state park to cut over to the Glen. It starts with a nice hillclimb section not unlike a brief tail of the dragon, that opens up to a purdy wide open countryside drive to the Glen that is faster and not mind numbing unlike the last-40 minutes of the highway route into town you will likely have. It has been a local driver’s favorite for decades. I’d say its worth its worth the “detour.” Plus Ithaca has an abundance dining, Cornell’s art museum blah blah I live there so maybe a good pit stop.
Beer, you say? Go to
Two goats brewery
up the east side of the lake, about 15 minutes from the center of town...It might be a mob scene that weekend but they have the best lake views, great beer and only 1 food- an awesome roast beef sammy with au jus, chips and horseradish. Sooo go at odd hours? Just go. I might go right now. Seriously, save that shit in your google maps. The left turn-in (if you don’t miss it entirely the first time) is very abrupt and steep like you might fly off a cliff into the lake or a vineyard if you come in too hot
Along that road you will pass a compelling euro-centric car yard that is Volvo, VW, Peugeot & British focused. The owner is cool he races a bare metal P1800 in vintage. It might be a cool walk around if thats your thing. Watch out for bees...yeah. Also there’s the tons of wineries, if that’s your thing. I would recommend Bloomer creek and nowhere else, as well as Fingerlakes Distillery which will be the first one you spot up that road. Excellent Gin/ Whiskey, get your loved ones a gift.
THE MOTOR RACING RESEARCH CENTER! Basically the most complete racing library in existence which the SCCA has recently decided to move its archives to. They have a ton of cool stuff plus one of our very own opponauts/ my friend/ scca co worker works there, aptly named racingarchivist.
Thats it! No more writing! Shit I should write for Frommer’s....

Banjo cat has a bunch of good suggestions. As a local, I have a lot of time I’ve spent at the track, though not camping. I think your plan sounds a good one. I would check on reserved camping (inside the track). It may be sold out already.
Ithaca is a good choice, but it does tend to be a wierd place, so just keep that in mind too. My personal must do is walk around “downtown” Watkins on a nice summer evening to the rocks at the marina and stop in at The Great Escape ice cream place on the way out.
You really can’t go wrong with the 6 hour weekend, lots of good racing, access all over the place in garages and such, and relatively small crowds.
